House Training an Older Dog

October 14th, 2008 · No Comments

With house training an older dog you just never know how it will go.  I am really pleased with Candy and how she has done.  She was scolded only the first few days here, with going potty in the house.  You are never quite sure just who is being trained though.  I feel pretty in tuned to my dogs, so sometimes I think I might be the one being trained as to the time they need out.  haha

We are coming up on Candy being here for 2 months, and I am happy to report, she is totally out of a crate.  Now for that to happen so fast is really great.  I am home 24 x 7 though which helps with training.  I even trust her in the house if I have to leave a couple hours, however any longer than that, I think I would still crate her yet.  The problem is, that extended times just don’t happen except when I go to dog training, and then she is with me.

I had started leaving the crate door open in the bedroom at night several weeks ago, however; Candy still would sleep in the crate.  I need to take the crate with me when I go to dog training, she gets to worked up while I am out of the car working other dogs and she is just all over the place.  Well this last Saturday after I got back from training, I just forgot to get the crate out of the car.  I really don’t like moving it back and forth.  I decided to see what Candy did with no crate in the bedroom.  Well she has been perfect!!  So the crate now can just stay in my vehicle.  I am glad to be done with the crate thing for a while in the house for sure.  Candy fits in great with the other dogs and there is still a peace in the house with adding a 3rd dog.
