LONGCOAT (long hair) GERMAN SHEPHERD gsd 2010

June 12th, 2009 · No Comments

I had heard some interesting news that the longcoats or long hair german shepherd were going to be accepted by Germany.  I decided to see what I could find out about this, so went to pedigree data base forum and did a search for the information to see if it was there.  There were posts about this that I found very interesting.  Here is the post.

I am sure that someone will correct me, if I am wrong, but it is my understanding that in 2010,
the SV will “recognize”  the longcoats (those with an undercoat, only).  But, they are NOT to
be bred with the stockcoats and separate breed books, shows and surveys will be maintained
for them.   Otherwise the standard and breeding requirements will be the same.

Interesting, huh?  ”

SCHUTZHUND PUPPY TRAINING VIDEO WEEK 1

June 11th, 2009 · No Comments

Izzy completed her first week of training.  She went for training to work with a helper and socialize with everyone.  Izzy did great in all areas.  Here is the video clip of both OB being taught at home and her first bite work with David.  View the video at  http://vonjacobs.com/Izzy6-9

SCHUTZHUND OBEDIENCE FOUNDATION TRAINING

June 11th, 2009 · No Comments

Izzy, a VA Ingodds Albert daughter, was picked up for training May 30, 2009.  Izzy is a high energy, high drive pup.  I first just let the pup settle in and get used to her surroundings.  Izzy acted as if she lived here all along, which is always great to see in a pup.  I always start my pups downstairs in our home, and live there with them for two reasons:

1.  We are at ground level making it easier to potty train.

2.  I am able to keep the pups seperate from my personal dogs living in the home until I am ready for the pup to meet the pack.  This also helps the pup to focus on me only, for training.

Izzy did great settling in, so I started with her training on Sunday.  She was quick to learn but over active, so my thoughts have been in what way can I settle her down to train.  After 2 full days of training, I did a video clip of her which I will post, but I am taking Izzy to training today, so she will be out and about in the big world socializing, and meeting a schutzhund helper for the first time.  I hope to add video of that to the training at home for Izzy’s first week of training.

At the end of our first week of OB training, Izzy understands verbal commands come and sit.  She understands hand signals of come, sit, down, swing (a flip finish coming into heel position) and is working on roll over and sitting up.

Izzy has a natural retrieve, she brings a ball right back to you, so we want to keep that going for sure, by making her want to keep bringing things back to me.  I am praising her and play with her to keep that going.

SCHUTZHUND SCH PUPPY FOUNDATION TRAINING

May 31st, 2009 · No Comments

Many breeders often send their dogs to Germany to be schutzhund titled.  The cost of titling a dog to Sch 1 is getting more expensive.  Many pay anywhere from five to seven thousand for this to be done.  The interesting thing about getting your dog back from Germany, is that most owners can’t  title their dog further, and sometimes you wonder how the dog even got titled to begin with.

I believe my foundation training of a very young puppy, in obedience, tracking, and protection play will make a pup easy for the owner to title the dog in schutzhund themselves, cutting down the amount of training that will be needed, not to mention the money saved.  I believe a pup with foundation training will already have an understanding of what they will be training for to attain the Schutzhund Title.  This puppy training is all done with positive reinforcement.  We are testing this for the first time with a breeder.  The breeder/trainer will be the one to see the difference immediately upon getting the pup back.  Should the breeder owner choose not to keep the pup, then she will be selling a highly trained puppy.

Many wonder why an owner/breeder would not do this themselves, the reason is time.  This training I do, takes many hours of just living with and focusing time on just one pup.  Many just don’t have this kind of time, as they work several dogs.

I plan to do video for the owner in all stages of the training, to show how the pup is doing.  These videos will be made available on this site.  The pups I train, live with me and end up with a huge vocabulary.  Check back for more information… and follow our test case pup, how fast she learns and all she will be working on.

Conformation - Seiger - Candy

October 19th, 2008 · No Comments

Well the Seiger is over and Candy made it though not being put at the very bottom.  Yeah!!  She actually got her SG rating which is the highest rating you can get for a dog with no SchH1 Title.  She wasn’t last either, she was second to last in line  hahaha however, she was right behind Wanda von Schneiden Fels, and I was told this judge happened to like large females.  So to get an idea of where Candy would be in the shows around our area, a good comparison would be Wanda.  That was really great news to me, and I don’t feel I have to show her any more to know that.  I was asked today about entering Candy in a show in Chicago, but I will pass, conformation is not my thing.  I will do only what is necessary for showing and I can’t get higher than the SG she was given.  It is more bothersome to me to have a 16 month old female that has no training.  That is where my time will go, now that this show is over.  I am glad I entered the biggest show in the US to get her SG, that alone says a lot for her first time ever to show.  Candy was jumping the tape fence I saw 4 times, circling the handler when they came to a stop, but did get through all the like 20 gun shots for this class… to me by all rights though she could have been put at the very very back with a G with the way she acted…but that was my opinion, the fact that she wasn’t, to me says her conformation stood out above anything else.  I am thankful to have reached my minimum goals with her at such a big event.  YEAH!!  WE DID IT!!

Even if you have top ranked dog, in the schutzhund arena for breeding, they aren’t worth much if you can’t title them, also for a female, they aren’t worth much if they can’t produce good litters and be good mothers.  Both factors still play into this with Candy, at least I have my Titled Stud to find out at no cost to me.  I have more known than unknowns about Candy though.  Now it will be training and titling if she is capable and I will get the verdict after she is finally tested by my trainer David Harris, that appointment is already scheduled for Tuesday and I feel I have waited a long time.   We knew from just seeing her she would easy go V if she can be titled.  She had good pre-limb x-rays so we knew she was good with hips and elbows, and we knew she had all her teeth, we knew she hadn’t been socialized very well, and we knew she had prey drive but no grip (she would bite and let go) at all.  Now we need to find out if she can be a working dog, before anything else showing is done.  If this dog has it in her at all, she will be titled.  Testing and time will tell, I am always hopeful and positive, and I feel I have the best trainer that there is to make it happen and happen fast if it can be done.  Will let you know how it goes and will get back to making some video once back at training.

House Training an Older Dog

October 14th, 2008 · No Comments

With house training an older dog you just never know how it will go.  I am really pleased with Candy and how she has done.  She was scolded only the first few days here, with going potty in the house.  You are never quite sure just who is being trained though.  I feel pretty in tuned to my dogs, so sometimes I think I might be the one being trained as to the time they need out.  haha

We are coming up on Candy being here for 2 months, and I am happy to report, she is totally out of a crate.  Now for that to happen so fast is really great.  I am home 24 x 7 though which helps with training.  I even trust her in the house if I have to leave a couple hours, however any longer than that, I think I would still crate her yet.  The problem is, that extended times just don’t happen except when I go to dog training, and then she is with me.

I had started leaving the crate door open in the bedroom at night several weeks ago, however; Candy still would sleep in the crate.  I need to take the crate with me when I go to dog training, she gets to worked up while I am out of the car working other dogs and she is just all over the place.  Well this last Saturday after I got back from training, I just forgot to get the crate out of the car.  I really don’t like moving it back and forth.  I decided to see what Candy did with no crate in the bedroom.  Well she has been perfect!!  So the crate now can just stay in my vehicle.  I am glad to be done with the crate thing for a while in the house for sure.  Candy fits in great with the other dogs and there is still a peace in the house with adding a 3rd dog.

WUSV - World Championships German Shepherd

October 10th, 2008 · No Comments

I got to go to opening day at the WUSV.  I would encourage anyone that can to make the trip and go, you will get to see some of the best dogs competing around the world.  It is set up that they do so many dogs with obedience on the field, about an hour, then they switch to protection for an hour, so even if you only have a half a day you would be able to see both phases compete.  I did get a snapshot of our first USA competitor, Karoly Meszaros and his dog Aceofnike van het Bleekhof do their protection routine… it was a great job, he got a 93.  Here are a couple snapshots I got of them.  Get out and enjoy!!  WUSV link

Parker X Lady Litter

October 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

I had just gotten these pictures of Ace.  Ace will be a working dog, trained in herding.  I am hoping Chad will go ahead and get a herding title on him when he is trained.  They say once a dog can herd, they can herd anything, maybe Chad will be able to find out if that is true.  I think as most titles, it comes down to obedience.

I would love to get more pictures of this litter also and will post any I receive.  Ace is going to be a big boy he was 4 months 6 days old in updated pictures.  This was my favorite puppy picture of Ace 12 days old.  Look at the size of that head..haha  I love it.
